With global warming being talked about the world over,Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. has proactively followed the Environmental and Social Policy & Procedures (ESPP) for the conservation of forests, flora & fauna, resettlement & rehabilitation.POWERGRID believes that its guiding principles of Reliability, Security and Economy have to match up to the rising expectations of a cleaner, safer, healthier environment for people, both affected and benefited by its activities. POWERGRID follows the Environmental and Social Policy & Procedures in every sphere of project implementation since 1998. The ESPP is based on the principals of Avoidance, Minimization and Mitigation. The ESPP outlines POWERGRID’s commitment to deal with environmental and social issues relating to its transmission projects and lays out management procedures and protocol to address them. Towards conservation of natural resources-particularly forest resources, POWERGRID has achieved tremendous success after the implementation of ESPP. The data shows that forest involvement, which was about 6% of total 27,000 Ckt. Km. line till 1998, has come down to 2%. Further, POWERGRID’s concern towards the environment can also be gauged from the fact that the tower height in case of Tehri transmission project has been raised to 75 – 85 meters from the usual 35 meters to minimize felling/ lopping of trees in Rajaji National Park and protection of wild life. In spite of transmission projects being nonpolluting ,POWERGRID has gone a step further and planned a transmission system for evacuation of about 6000 MW Hydro (clean) power from North Eastern Region which has been posed for availing Carbon Credits under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in association with The World Bank. It will be the first such type of project in the world and will go a long way in reducing GHG emission and will provide additional revenue from sale of Certified Emission Reduction (CER) which shall be used for providing clean and cheap electricity to its stakeholders
